Thistle California Collective was born out of a simple yet profound idea: to combine the elegance of fine wine with the personal touch of custom branding. The journey began in 2012 when David Williamson, an electronics engineer and entrepreneur with a deep appreciation for wine, started gifting personalized wine bottles to his clients as a thank you for their business. These custom-labeled bottles were a hit, sparking a realization that there was a significant market for such unique and thoughtful gifts.

David’s foray into the world of wine was not accidental. His love for the craft led him to explore vineyards across California, meeting with winemakers and learning about the intricate process of winemaking. Over the years, David developed a refined palate and a robust understanding of the various factors that contribute to the quality of wine, including weather, soil, and aging processes. This knowledge became the cornerstone of Thistle California Collective.

In the early days, the company operated out of a small home office, with David personally handling every aspect of the business—from selecting wines and designing labels to packaging and delivering the final product. His dedication to quality and personal service quickly garnered a loyal client base, primarily consisting of attorneys, realtors, financial advisors, and small business owners who valued the unique touch that Thistle brought to their corporate gifts.

One of Thistle’s first major successes came from a nationwide worker’s compensation company that embraced the concept of custom-branded wine for their marketing efforts. Their innovative approach, which included using Thistle’s branded bottles at trade shows and corporate events, won them a prestigious marketing award and significantly boosted their brand visibility. This success story exemplifies the impact that personalized wine gifts can have, reinforcing Thistle’s mission to create memorable and impactful branding experiences.

Today, Thistle California Collective continues to thrive, offering a curated selection of wines from top vineyards in California. Despite the growth, the company remains committed to its roots of providing personal service and high-quality products. David Williamson, the visionary behind Thistle California Collective, is more than just a wine enthusiast; he is a connoisseur with a profound understanding of the art and science of winemaking. David’s journey into the world of wine began during his college and university  years, where he partnered with the owner of a home brewing business in his historic home town of Dunfermline in Scotland, testing and evaluating beer and wine making products.. This experience ignited a lifelong passion for wine, inspiring him to delve deeper into the intricacies of viticulture and oenology.

Over the years, David has traveled extensively, visiting renowned wine regions not only in California but also across Europe, South Africa and Australia. These travels have allowed him to build relationships with winemakers and vineyard owners, gaining insights into the diverse techniques and traditions that shape the world’s best wines. His extensive knowledge and experience enable him to meticulously select wines that meet Thistle’s high standards of quality and taste.

David’s expertise is not just theoretical; he personally hosts corporate and individual  wine-tasting and educational events. His discerning palate and ability to identify subtle nuances in flavor profiles make him an invaluable asset to Thistle California Collective.
